Just before Christmas, Oscar, from East Bergholt, had been enjoying his cousin’s birthday party at an indoor play area when he injured his leg coming down a slide.
Oscar’s injury was serious and he was immediately in a significant pain:
When asked how much pain he was in Oscar replied: “On a scale of 1 to 10, it was 120!” said mum, Alison.
The family phoned 999 and a SARS solo paramedic, Keiran Bromley was dispatched to the scene, arriving first at Oscar’s side. He was soon joined by fellow SARS responder, Dr Ben Peirce who in his day-job is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the West Suffolk Hospital.
Dr Ben said: “It was immediately obvious that Oscar had suffered a potentially life changing injury, breaking the main bone in his thigh. His leg was deformed and he was understandably in a lot of pain. The situation was made worse by the fact he was still on the play equipment and it was going to be difficult to get him comfortably to a waiting ambulance.”
Working alongside Keiran, Dr Ben quickly administered a specialist pain-killing drug to Oscar to help reduce his pain. He then provided further levels of pain relief by sedating Oscar to enable him to be comfortably moved off the slide and his leg splinted securely. Dr Ben then accompanied Oscar in the back of the ambulance to hospital to ensure that his condition remained stable throughout.
Providing advanced pain relief and preventing potential disability in seriously injured patients are key elements of the voluntary work SARS performs on a daily basis throughout Suffolk.
Paramedic Kieran said:
“It was so nice to see Oscar again at SARS HQ, smiling and joking just a few weeks after his injury. I am really pleased that he’s on the road to recovery.”
Oscar’s mum, Alison commented,
“It was so lovely to meet everyone at SARS, Oscar certainly felt like a celebrity. Thank you so much to SARS for helping us at a great time of need and ensuring Oscar got the right pain relief and medical input at the right time. We are eternally grateful for all the caring team at SARS. ”
