The first half of the year saw a 15% increase in voluntary critical care team shifts provided by SARS. The SARS team vehicle, SMED20, is crewed by a dedicated group of 25 clinicians who have increased their voluntary hours, this year, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19.
The SARS teams normally consist of an anaesthetist or consultant in emergency medicine and a critical care paramedic or advance clinical practitioner. Our objective is to replicate some of the skills and equipment found in a hospital ICU and bring them into the prehospital environment. SMED20 has responded to incidents across the county with SARS teams making advanced interventions to help treat critically ill or injured patients before they reach hospital.
Thanks to a £40,000 donation from the HELP Appeal, we are looking forward to launching our new team vehicle SMED26 in the very near future.
